Why Traction Fluids are Necessary

In a continuously variable transmission, the discs and rollers operate together at high pressure, ranging from 10 to 30 kPa (1.5 to 4.5 psi) and even higher. Such conditions will elastically deform even steel. To avoid seizure and abrasion, the discs and rollers must be prevented from coming into direct contact with each other. TDF flows between the discs and rollers, lubricating the surfaces for protection and transmitting power between them.

The graphic below shows how TDF's lubrication increases the capacity to transmit power. This potential to transmit power is referred to as the traction coefficient. As the traction coefficient increases, the traction force increases proportionally. Therefore, a larger traction coefficient must be produced in order to increase the traction force.

TDF provides a greater traction coefficient for a higher traction force. This also avoids slippage and power not being transferred that can occur with a low coefficient of friction between the discs and rollers. An additional feature of Idemitsu's TDF is its ability to instantly turn to solid glass to ensure transmission when high power is needed.

Thus, Idetmitsu's TDF is an essential part of a continuously variable transmission, just as important as the gears or belt.

These lubricants, ordinarily liquid, under extreme pressures in the contact zone form solid films which keep surfaces with potential metal-to-metal contact apart, as well as provide traction. This results in increased speeds, enhanced power output, wear prevention, and extended useful life of the equipment. Traction is measured by coefficient of traction, which is the ratio of transmitted force to contact force. Traction coefficient of SantoTrac fluids at 40°C and 5-10% slide-to-roll ratio is in excess of 0.1. While these lubricants are fluids of choice for many applications involving elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, such as gear systems, ball and roller bearings, rolling assemblies, and belt drives, they are especially useful in extending the life of the industrial gear-less Planetroll type systems and are also the choice lubricants for the new generation automotive transmission systems, where continuously variable transmissions (CVT) are used.

Unlike other lubricants that employ traction-inducing additives, our traction lubricants are derived from synthetic hydrocarbon base fluids with inherent traction properties and therefore maintain their effectiveness during extended use.

SantoTrac lubricants are produced in a range of viscosity grades, wide enough to enable the user to select the most suitable viscosity for particular operating conditions and applications.  All grades offer stability at high temperature, high shear resistance, high coefficient of traction, and good lubricating performance. This product is especially useful in operating environment that requires enhanced oxidation stability and increased protection against rust and corrosion. SANTOTRAC 50 - Low Viscosity, High Traction Fluid

SANTOTRAC 50 Traction Fluid is a low viscosity synthetic hydrocarbon-based traction fluid that is especially designed for applications where low to medium film strength is desired. This product has high coefficient of traction and is fortified with a proprietary additive system to enhance its antiwear and extreme load-carrying and high temperature properties. This fluid is approved for use in and around food manufacturing machinery where there is no chance of food contamination. SANTOTRAC 50 is essentially nontoxic, especially when proper hygienic practices are followed.

SANTOTRAC 70 - High Viscosity, High Traction Lubricant

SANTOTRAC 70 Traction Fluid is a medium viscosity synthetic hydrocarbon-based traction fluid that is especially designed for applications where medium to high film strength is desired. This product has high coefficient of traction and is fortified with a proprietary additive system to enhance its antiwear and extreme load-carrying and high temperature properties. SANTOTRAC 70 is essentially nontoxic, especially when proper hygienic practices are followed. 

SANTOTRAC 332-FG - Food Grade Traction Fluid

SANTOTRAC 332-FG Traction Fluid is a low viscosity synthetic hydrocarbon-based traction fluid that is especially designed for use in high-speed operations where low to medium film strength is desired. This product has high coefficient of traction and is fortified with a proprietary additive system to enhance its antiwear and extreme load-carrying and high temperature properties. This product is especially useful in operating environments that require enhanced oxidation stability and increased protection against rust and corrosion. SANTOTRAC 332-FG carries H1 credentials hence its incidental contact with food and drugs during manufacture must not be of concern. This fluid is essentially nontoxic, especially when normal hygienic practices are followed.               

HYDRATORQUE 1842B - Low Viscosity, Medium Traction Fluid

HYDRATORQUE 1842-B automotive lubricant is a low viscosity synthetic hydrocarbon -synthetic ester blend that is fortified with a proprietary additive system to impart or enhance desirable properties. HYDRATORQUE 1842-B is designed for applications that require good film strength, excellent low and high-temperature viscometrics, superior thermo-oxidative stability, and outstanding antiwear and rust and corrosionperformance. HYDRATORQUE 1842-B is essentially nontoxic, especially when proper hygienic practices are followed.
