Dropping Point ASTM D2265 :

Looking at the dropping point gives you an idea what the highest temperature the grease is rated for. Generally high dropping points (greater than  260 C) are better so when the bearings, joints, pins etc do heat up the grease is not running out and leaving little to no lubricant behind.  Always make sure that the maximum temperature of the grease application is well within the limit set by the dropping point.

Low Temperature Torque ASTM D4693 :

Just like knowing the high temperature limits of the greaseis important, so is knowing the low temperature limits as well.  Often high temp greases do not perform well at extreme cold temperatures and so knowing how the grease performs in cold (this test is administered at -40C) will give you an idea. This test method involves measuring how well the grease retards a spring-loaded wheel bearing assembly when subjected to lower temperatures.  This measurement is then used to calculate torque in NM at -40C.  Lower numbers indicate that less torque is required and therefore the grease has not become so thick as to prevent usefulness.  If this number is not reported then it is most likely that the grease does not function well in extreme cold.

Oil Separation ASTM D1742 :

Many lithium based greases will separate when in storage and oil will drip from the grease gun. Relatively low oil separation helps with long term storage and is important to maintain the advantage of anti-wear and extreme pressure agents which protect bearings when in use. This test measures oil bleed over a 24 hour period.  Aluminum complexes and calcium sulfonate greases typically demonstrate the least amount of oil separation.

Water Washout ASTM D1264 :

Measured as a percentage of how easily grease washes out under direct water contact this can be an indicator of how the grease will perform in wet, and humid environments. This test is performed by running water for 1 hour over a ball bearing apparatus in a controlled stream.  Grease that is washed away is measured by weight.  Water contamination can also cause rust and corrosion issues which can destroy bearings and equipment. Typical high quality grease results are in the 3-5% range, exceptional greases can even reach below 1%.

4 Ball wear testing ASTM 2596 :

Provides 3 results which can be considered:  The Load Wear Index is a measurement based on the size of the wear marks on the bearings used and the force applied.  The weld point is the maximum kgf (kilogram force) that is applied using the 4 ball extreme pressure tester, testing protocol ends at 500.  Wear scar size is also often provided. High quality greases will have high Load Wear Indexes (greater than 50), a high weld point (greater than 300) and a small wear scar (less than 0.5mm).  The Timkin OK load can also be used to measure extreme pressure protection (look for results greater than 25 kg).
